Donda West, Mother of Ye, Honored With Chicago Street Dedication

The legacy of Dr. Donda West is continuing to live on in the Chicago community. The late educator, scholar, and mother of Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, was recently honored with the naming of a portion of 78th Street on Chicago’s South Side. The street is now called “Dr. Donda West Way.” The ceremony took place September 22, 2026, near the South Shore neighborhood where Donda West and her son once lived.

Ye returned to his hometown to take part in the ceremony and helped unveil the street sign carrying his mother’s name. He was joined by Chicago officials, family members, longtime friends, and several artists who knew Donda West. Among those in attendance were Chicago artists Che “Rhymefest” Smith, GLC, Really Doe, and Don “Don C” Crawley.

While Donda West became internationally known as the mother of one of hip-hop’s biggest artists, the ceremony focused on her own accomplishments. She spent nearly three decades teaching at Chicago State University, where she served as chair of the English Department. She also founded the Gwendolyn Brooks Center for Black Literature and Creative Writing and was recognized for her commitment to education, literature, and Black creativity.

Chicago 7th Ward Alderman Greg Mitchell described West as more than an educator, highlighting her influence as someone who developed people, encouraged talent and supported intellectual and creative achievement. Former colleagues and people who knew her also spoke about the impact she had on young people throughout the community.

For some of the Chicago artists who grew up around Ye, Donda West was much more than a mother to her own son. She was remembered as a supportive figure who welcomed Ye’s friends into her home and encouraged their creative ambitions. Che “Rhymefest” Smith referred to her as a “village mom,” reflecting the role she played in the lives of many young people around her.

Her influence also extended into Ye’s early career. According to longtime associates, Donda West supported her son’s decision to pursue music and was involved in the business side of his early career. She helped establish West Brands and encouraged Ye and his friends to think about business and entrepreneurship alongside their creative work.

Donda West died in 2007 at the age of 58. In the years since her death, Ye has continued to honor her through his music and creative work. His 2021 album Donda was named after her and incorporated her voice, while his music throughout his career has included numerous references to their relationship.

The new Dr. Donda West Way designation carries particular meaning because it is located close to the former West family home, a place closely connected to Ye’s childhood and the beginnings of his musical journey. It gives residents and visitors a permanent reminder of the woman whose influence reached beyond her family and into Chicago’s educational and creative communities.
